Patrick and Jason were playing in Jason's bedroom the other night when Scott told me the neighbors were giving away a bush. I went outside to see which one and Scott followed - I should have told him to stay in the house. Next thing we know, Patrick is running out of the house screaming "Ow! Ow! Ow!" and holding his head. I didn't think much of it because Patrick yells like this about everything, particularly if Jason does something to him. Scott goes to check and calls me over at which point I see the robin's egg size lump on Patrick forehead. Turns out Jason had kicked Patrick who then fell into the corner of the bedframe. We went off to the ER just to be sure he was OK and after 4 hours were told that he's most likely fine and were sent home with little more than a suggestion of Tylenol. He's down to a slight scratch and a faint yellowish bruise.
Patrick is still milking the injury...... After more than a week. Do all 5 year olds do this?
Today we went to McDonalds to eat and play. Patrick and Jason were having a great time with a couple of girls. Again, I should have realized that socks and hard floors do not mix well but I let them play. Jason was enjoying being chased by said girls Next thing I know, Jason is hitting the ground and coming over crying. No biggie - in fact very little blood, just a smidge where he bit his lip. About and hour later, we go to Target to get a new swimming suit for mommy and I notice that Jason's face looks funny. In fact, the right side of his nose is all swollen and starting to turn blueish and I swear that his nose looks crooked. It's hard to tell because his lip is a little swollen. He's also sniffing a lot which he wasn't doing prior to the injury. So off to the doctor we go. We've got to wait until the swelling goes down to see if the nose is broken - it is possible that it's just the swelling causing his nose to go crooked. I've got some hope that the nose is not broken because it didn't bleed, he's not complaining about it hurting, and while it is more blue it's not awful looking yet. We need him to be seen by an ENT for his tonsils anyway (they are huge and possibly interfering with his sleep) so we'll have that and his nose examined on Friday for the final verdict.
He's not milking his injury...... We'll see how tomorrow goes.
So both brothers and girls can result in facial injuries. Perhaps we should paste warnings to their heads.
I actually do feel bad sometimes that I'm not updating. :) Really, I swear. Still teaching at Manor Middle School and still being driven nuts by kids. But today was the last day of school so I feel marginally better. They've pinned me for a middle school level pre-engineering course called the Infinity Project. It sounds really cool but I have no idea how we are implementing it. Could be a whole new course, could be put into the math/science courses, could be put into a career connections course - none of which I currently teach. *sigh* Whatever, free training and a chance to get in on what could potentially be really cool for our kids. If they do the Lego Robotics stuff, I am so there!
We're sort of getting around to actually doing something with the backyard this year. The playscape gets installed in a couple of weeks and then we'll probably do grass. I need to figure out what kind of patio/deck we're doing. I really want that project done but I don't want to do it myself - too hot and I'm a wimp. I still need to get through all the crud in the garage this summer. I'm hoping to have that all cleared out by the end of June so I can do a yard sale. If not, I may just chuck stuff in the street and put a free sign on it.
Patrick starts Kindergarden next year. Scary... He's none to excited but having had the same teachers for two years has a lot to do with that. He says he's scared but I'm assuring him that everyone else is scared too and his new teacher will help him to get through it.
Jason is going to be put off from pre-school. He turns 4 on September 7 and the district absolutely will not budge on him starting next year. I suppose it's good to let him be a baby for a bit longer but he's already out sizing all of his classmates and it's just going to get worse. By middle school, he'll at least be plenty big enough for being a linebacker or something - just watch him be awful at sports!
The boys both start swimming lessons next week. I'm hoping they do well enough to go to the next level before the end of summer. This class is just to get them comfy with the water, not really to learn how to swim. I've got training the 3rd week of June, two one-day trainings in July, and a three day training in July or August in Dallas. Wouldn't be so bad but every week of training costs me a good $300 in childcare expenses I wouldn't otherwise have. Whatever, I did no training last year so this makes up for that.
Oh and horror! If you don't have a backup method for your computer files, GET ONE! I had backed up my stuff to Scott's computer for a reinstall. I hadn't gotten around to moving it back which was just as well when I lost one of the disks in my raid. I lost very few files. Bad when Scott's drive decided to die. We've taken it to a recovery place and if they are successful, it'll cost a good $1500 to get our data back. Worth it to get ALL of my files but so not in the plans for where to spend our money. Oh and we still need to pay for some kind of backup solution. *sigh*
I'm taking a class in Digital Imaging. I ♥ Photoshop! The picture isn't quite done but I got tired, especially after I deleted 3 days of work. Thankfully it only took a couple of hours to reproduce the changes.
After reading a Momaroo post about struggling mommies and how you so often hear from others with perfect hubbies and perfect kiddos and heck, even a perfect dog to add to the mix. It makes you feel pretty stupid when you're sitting at your computer after not having had a proper shower for 2 days, are wearing clothing that even Goodwill wouldn't take (because it's the only clean you could find when you were woken by the kids letting the not-quite-housetrained puppy out of her crate for a good old play/pee/chew session), are surrounded by clutter that you can't quite seem to get to, and just broke something in your foot after having stepped on some McDonalds toy that is now playing an awful melody to add to your pain.
Not that I've ever had a morning like that. Really, my kids ARE perfect and so is the dog. She never bites people or jumps on me or pees in her crate or does one of a million other things that you should EXPECT a 10 week old puppy to do. And the kids, man the are perfect too. Jason (the nearly 3 year old if you can believe it) never whines or claims that all of the turns are his or hits his brother or refuses to let you change his clothes or wash his hair or even brush his hair or .... Patrick (nearly 4 1/2) never, ever screams, hits, lies about who did the latest in a series of misdeeds, never says "Mommy you're not my best friend" and doesn't mimic me derisively or demand that I say I'm sorry for putting him in timeout. No, not my family. *snort* Yep, if you believe that, I've got some ocean front property down the street to sell you real cheap.
Nope, those of you struggling as parents are not alone. Those of you who are not parents yet, a note... If you kids do turn out to actually be perfect, make up some rotten behavior like picking their nose at the dinner table or running away from you in the grocery store. It'll help the rest of us feel better.
